Chapter 8 & 9

Teachers act as designers when design competitions act as key motivators for learners to develop “deeper understandings of concepts in memorable contexts” (170). This is basic for building meaningful learning. Impromptu is a powerful, elegant free software for designing music. The idea of chunking is something I just learned in Psychology. This is a method that helps students learn more effectively. Chunking is incorporated in this program. Children/students can be asked to design their own compositions by reconstructing a tune and creating an original melody. Digital story telling is a tool used to create a story. Kids do it by incorporating stories told on paper, camera shooting a video, editing that video, and loading it into the computer. This is also a way to provide collaborative skills, students being assigned particulars of the story to be responsible for. Example: a student taking direct camera shots. I love this idea because the entire class can participate, allowing students to use their particular skills of learning to be incorporated in producing an entire piece of work. This is a great way of educating the kids to understand the difference between creator and viewer.

I despise Mathematics, reason being, I am so lousy at it! Perhaps I could have been a more productive and a better student if some of the things that are described in Chapter 9, would have been used in the classroom. One idea I especially like is the idea that visualization tools can be used to better explain Math when using the computer. Mathematica is an online site often used to visually represent mathematical relationships in problems “so that learners can see the effects of any manipulation” (198).Since I am a “visual” learner, and am talented in art, I think Math would be much more interesting if it was explained in this way. In this way a learned can actually “see” the effects of any problem through manipulation.

While TV instruction is good, I don’t believe there is anything that can teach a student or allow for more productivity as well as a real live teacher. I hope to incorporate many of the items I have learned in chapter 8 & 9 when I actually become a teacher. But I hope to be the type of teacher that is invaluable to my students, no matter what a great program is designed in the concepts of learning.
